Synopsis[]
Kubariki's Clan rescues an amnesic striped hyena.
Transcript[]
On a tranquil day in the Pride Lands, Jasiri and her family were settled down outside their den in Chakula Plains, watching Tunu and Wema play tag.
"It certainly has been a peaceful day," Mlinzi commented.
"Yes. It is nice to see the little ones enjoying themselves," Kubariki replied, observing Tunu and Wema chasing each other.
"Do you remember when we used to play like that, Madoa?" Jasiri asked, glancing over at her sister.
Madoa nodded.
"We had a lot of fun," she reflected
Jasiri watched as Tunu leapt onto Wema, pinning her to the ground.
"You're it, Wema!" he exclaimed, his voice carrying over to where the others were watching them.
Suddenly, Wema looked over at them, her expression brightening.
"Come play with us!" she urged.
Jasiri, Madoa, and Asante exchanged a glance.
"Okay, we're coming!" Jasiri shouted back.
She, Asante, and Madoa got up and headed over to the two cubs.
"What do you want to play?" Madoa asked.
"Can we play hide and seek?" Wema pleaded.
"Of course, come over here," Jasiri said.
She led them over to a large bush.
"Do you want us to be it, or do you want to be it?" she asked.
"We wanna be it!" Tunu and Wema said together.
"Okay then, go and hide and we'll count to ten," Jasiri encouraged.
They immediately scampered off, and Jasiri began to count slowly.
"One, two, three, four, five," she counted.
Before she could continue, two brown hyenas approached them, identical looks of concern and apprehension on their faces.
"Kubariki, we need to talk to you!"
"Shinda, Sachihiro, what is the matter? Has something happened?" Kubariki asked.
"We were hunting in the Outlands and we heard an animal crying, it sounded like it was in trouble!" Shinda reported.
"That sounds serious. Let me go find it, Mom. I can help whoever it is," Jasiri offered immediately.
"Thank you, my dear, but if it's indeed a serious problem, it will require more than you to solve it. We will all go," Kubariki replied.
Tunu and Wema immediately bounded over to them, their eyes bright with interest. Mdalasini was following close behind them.
"Aren't we still playing hide and seek?" Wema asked.
"Why are you leaving? Can we go too?" Tunu added curiously.
"Absolutely not! The Outlands is no place for young cubs such as yourselves. You two are staying here," Kubariki said firmly.
"We wanna come too!” Wema pleaded.
“We'll behave, we promise!" Tunu added.
“You heard me, you two are staying right here. Mdalasini will look after you,” Kubariki stated.
Mdalasini stepped forward to stand beside the two cubs.
"It's okay, you two, I'll play with you," she said.
"We should be back before sundown," Kubariki said.
"Come on, Mom. The animal could be injured," Jasiri said urgently.
"Let's go, everyone, we mustn't waste time," Kubariki stated.
As they headed towards the border, Mlinzi turned to Shinda and Sachihiro.
"Could you determine the species of the animal that's in trouble?" he asked.
"No, we weren't close enough to decipher the species, sorry Mlinzi," Shinda replied.
"Do you know where the animal is?" Madoa asked.
"It sounded like it was coming from the cliffs," Sachihiro answered.
As they began to head towards the cliffs, Asante glanced over at Mlinzi.
"Do you think you'll have enough herbs to help the animal, Dad?" she asked.
"I don't know, sweetheart. I can't determine what herbs I need unless I see the injury," Mlinzi responded.
When they arrived at the cliffs, they immediately spotted a gray striped hyena sprawled beside a large a large boulder. A deep gash stretched across his head, from his neck to at least down in the direction of his belly, marred with newly-formed scabs and dappled with drying scarlet blood. One of his legs was bent at a sharp ninety-degree angle, clearly broken and unable to be used. His body was covered in smaller, dark pink scars and missing patches of fur. Without a doubt, the striped hyena was in severe pain.
We got here just in time. This hyena could die without our help. We need to save him, Jasiri thought.
As they approached the hyena, he suddenly glanced up, a growl rising in his chest.
"You scavengers stay away from me!" he hissed, attempting to clamber up to his paws, but he growled, pain from his broken leg and wounds pulsing through him. He fell to the sandy stone with a harsh thud.
"Easy there. We just want to help,” Kubariki clarified tenderly. "We are a clan of hy-"
Without warning, the striped hyena snarled, exposing his canines and trying to make a lunge toward both Kubariki and Mlinzi. But once more, the pain proved to be in control, for it yanked him down to the stones. He spat out a few droplets of blood from his mouth and panted, already exhausted from having pushed his body so far just to echo out his challenges.
Slowly, Jasiri approached the hyena, ignoring the concerned murmurs from her sisters.
"It's all right, we won't hurt you. My family and I just came to help."
Asante and Madoa came forward to stand beside their sister.
"What's your name?" Asante asked.
The hyena glared at her, mistrust lighting his eyes.
"Give me a single reason as to why I should trust you scavengers!" the hyena spat.
"Well, for one thing," Madoa stated, "you're like us, except that you have stripes and no spots. Sisi ni sawa!"
"That means that we're the same," Jasiri chimed in.
"We're the same...?"
The sisters nodded.
"So...that's my reason to trust you?"
"Certainly. We just want to help you. You're injured, distressed, and in quite the amount of agony. There are predators here in the Outlands who would love to have you for an afternoon snack," Kubariki responded.
The hyena gulped, tail tucked between his legs. "Right, right... okay. You're not a threat, I give in." He stared up at them and let his hackles stop bristling.
"How did you get hurt?" Madoa asked.
"I…I was taking a walk and suddenly I tripped, next thing I knew I had fallen off a cliff and landed here. Everything after that is hazy," the hyena admitted.
"My clan will help you. You are welcome to return to our home, Chakula Plains, and we will treat your injuries," Kubariki said gently.
"Chakula Plains? Where's that?" the hyena questioned, a note of anxiousness in his tone.
"It's all right, it's where we live in the Pride Lands," Jasiri explained.
"Are hyenas really welcome?”
"Yes, don't worry. You're safe with us," Madoa replied.
"We'll help you, you can ride on our backs," Mlinzi offered, glancing at Shinda and Sachihiro.
The three of them crouched down, and Kubariki and Jasiri gently began to nudge the hyena onto their backs, Madoa and Asante steadying him on both sides.
"Come on, everyone. He needs treatment as soon as possible," Kubariki said.
They began to make their way back to the Pride Lands, Mlinzi, Shinda and Sachihiro walking slowly under the weight of the hyena, Asante and Madoa staying close beside them to help keep him steady.
Jasiri walked beside them, watching as the hyena struggled to remain conscious.
"We'll be there soon, and then you can rest. My dad can fix you up so you feel better."
When they arrived in Chakula Plains, Tunu and Wema immediately rushed over to them.
"You're back!" Wema said excitedly, her eyes widening as she and Tunu watched Mlinzi, Shinda and Sachihiro gently lower the hyena to the ground, settling him in a soft nest.
"Who's that? Why is he here?" she asked.
“Is he hurt? What happened to him?” Tunu questioned.
By this point, the rest of the clan had gathered around them, whispers spreading through the crowd as they observed the newcomer.
"Wema! Tunu, there you are! I told you to stay in the den!" Mdalasini scolded, hurrying up to them and looking around at the crowd of hyenas.
"Everyone! Give them some space! I'm sure we'll find out what happened later."
She ushered the cubs towards the cave, the rest of the clan following reluctantly.
Once they'd gone, Mlinzi began to head towards a cleft in the cave.
"I'll fetch some herbs to treat the injuries. It won't take long."
Jasiri moved forward to settle beside the hyena.
"You'll be safe here, you can rest. We'll help fix your injuries right up."
"Thank you, I can't imagine what would've happened if you hadn't found me. What's it like being a Pride Lander?" he asked.
"Being a Pride Lander is wonderful. The kingdom is very safe, peace is almost everlasting. Everyone here is friendly, welcoming, and compassionate. It's all part of the unique charm this place has." Jasiri said.
Suddenly, Mlinzi approached, carrying a herb bundle in his jaws. He moved forward, setting the bundle down beside the hyena, slicing it open with a claw.
"I've brought some thyme leaves to help you relax and ease your anxiety," Mlinzi explained.
The hyena leaned forward to lap up the leaves, relaxing as Mlinzi began to sort through the rest of the herbs. He nudged a small bundle of white flowers towards him.
"This is feverfew. It'll help soothe the pain in your head," he explained.
He watched as the hyena lapped up the flowers.
He pulled yellow-flowered shrubs, serval sticks, blue flowers, and a swath of cobwebs from the bundle.
"I'm going to use broom, bindweed, and cobwebs to wrap up your leg," he continued.
As Mlinzi began to treat the injured hyena's leg, Jasiri moved closer to settle beside him.
"The Pride Lands is a very safe and harmonious habitat. There's a Lion Guard that protects us from attacks, and we are led by a fair and good king, Simba, who allows our clan to reside here peacefully, as we respect the Circle of Life," Jasiri said.
The hyena raised his head towards her, his eyes blurry and unfocused as he listened.
Mlinzi finished wrapping up his leg, and applied the poultice.
"All right, your leg is all wrapped up. I put a marigold poultice on the wrap to help the infection. You'll need to stay off it as much as possible for a few sunrises."
"You are more than welcome to stay here with us while you recover. We will share our prey with you until you're able to catch your own." Kubariki added.
"The herbs I gave you will help your head injury, but it will take time for them to take effect," Mlinzi said.
"We'll show you around once you've recovered if you want, we know a lot of good places around here," Jasiri offered.
"I'd like that, it sounds like fun," the hyena said.
A week had passed, and in the days following the discovery of his battered self, the rogue striped hyena had improved drastically. He had been able to get up and help around the clan's place, limping on three legs. While his broken leg hadn't quite healed yet, it was on track to fully recover and function like it used to.
He had also been able to hunt small prey and eat and drink on his own, no longer needing help from the clan. Now, he sat peacefully at the edge of the clearing, gazing across Chakula Plains with a serene expression on his face.
Mlinzi trotted up to him. "You seem to have improved significantly," he murmured, taking a seat next to him.
"You're fully healed and welcome to return home - whether that home's in the Pride Lands or the Outlands."
The hyena nodded, his green eyes glinting. "Thanks for your help- oh! I remember everything now... I'm a rogue!"
He stood up, momentarily wobbling before standing straight. "I'm Shalo, and I'm a vagabond. I don't have a home, but I roam the Outlands and take shelter where I please. I was exploring a cliff when I slipped, and that's when I lost most of my memory... but I remember everything."
Curious by what was unfolding, most of Kubariki's Clan had joined Mlinzi, sitting next to or not far from him.
"Goodbye stranger!" Tunu shouted.
"Have a nice life!" Wema added.
"Tunu! Wema! Remember your manners!" Asante scolded, rolling her eyes. "Sorry, Shalo. Kids will be kids."
"It's cool, Asante," Shalo replied. "I better get going."
With that, Shalo turned around and walked steadily out into the grassy fields of Chakula Plains, healed and embracing his vagrant nature once more.

Trivia[]
- This is the first episode that the Lion Guard does not make an appearance. However, they are mentioned.
- In the first version of the episode...
- Fisi was the rogue hyena and he and Jasiri had feelings for each other, but this was changed.
- Fisi was a protagonist, but his role was changed to be an antagonist to prevent major continuity errors.
- In the second version of the episode...
- Jasiri and a few of her friends and kin would hunt down the rogue hyena, which was still Fisi, and face off against him and Janja's Clan, who had wanted to take Fisi as a member of their own clan. Fisi would angrily rebuke them and run off. This was written out in the third version, which Av says "never made any sense considering Fisi is a member of Janja's Clan already is already established to exist in Team Play. Introducing him here is the thing that didn't make sense to me."
