Himalayan tahrs have small heads and pointed ears, large eyes, and varying horns on both males and females. Females are smaller and have smaller horns; the horns are curved backwards on both sexes to prevent injuries, especially during sparring between males during mating season. Himalayan tahrs have long, thick reddish coats and undercoats which thin at the end of winter and becomes lighter in color. They wield an even number of toes and have adapted to walking and climbing the surfaces of the mountains they live on. Their hooves are durable and rubbery, important traits for traversing the rocky ground.
Himalayan tahrs live in cool climates with rocky terrain and consume grasses, leaves, and fruits. Their multi-chambered stomachs grant them the ability to consume vital plant nutrients. Competitions among mountain Tahrs for females is high, and males mate opportunistically. Females give birth to one kid that stands immediately after birth.
