The Rogue Hyena[]

When Kubariki's Clan arrives in the Outlands to investigate reports of an animal crying, they discover a male striped hyena badly injured - his body is scarred, missing fur, and bloodied, and one of his legs is broken. Jasiri, knowing that he's in severe pain, notes that he could have died if they didn't come quicker and that he needs to be helped. Glancing up, the striped hyena growls at them to stay away from him, attempting to climb to his paws. However, the pain from his broken leg weighs him down, and he collapses onto the ground. Kubariki assures him that they just want to help, trying to explain who they are, but he only snarls and lunges at her and Mlinzi. Despite his effort, his broken leg weighs him down again, causing him to collapse on the ground and spit a few droplets of blood out of his mouth, panting out of exhaustion. Ignoring the concerned murmuring of Asante and Madoa, Jasiri reassures the striped hyena that they won't hurt him and that her family came to help him, and Asante requests his name.

Instead, he snarls and demands why he should trust them, to which Madoa states that he's exactly like them, except he has stripes in place of spots, murmuring the phrase "Sisi ni sawa." Jasiri proceeds to translate this to "we're the same," and the hyena begins to understand, earning the sisters' approval. He questions if this is the reason why he should trust them, and Kubariki doubles down, affirming that he's distressed and in pain and reminding him that he could easily fall victim to the predators that live in the Outlands. Gulping, he concedes and accepts their help. Madoa inquires as to how he got injured, but he doesn't remember, only knowing that he walking atop the cliffs before he slipped and fell; everything else after that is hazy. Kubariki invites him to their home in Chakula Plains, where he'll be treated for his injuries, though he anxiously wonders where that is. Jasiri explains that it's their home in the Pride Lands, and when he asks if hyenas are truly welcome, Madoa replies that he's safe with them. Mlinzi offers for him to ride on his, Shinda, and Shinuni's backs, and slowly, Kubariki and Jasiri nudge him onto them with Madoa and Asante steadying on both sides. Kubariki urges the clan to move, as the striped hyena needs treatment as soon as possible, and they begin to make their way back to the Pride Lands.

Walking beside the clan, Jasiri watches the striped hyena struggle to remain awake, and she informs him that they'll return to Chakula Plains soon - then her father can treat him. When they return to Chakula Plains and place the hyena in a soft nest, Tunu and Wema excitedly question what's going on and who he is, scoring the interest of the entire clan, and Mdalasini scolds Tunu and Wema for leaving the den, encouraging the other hyenas to leave some space. Mlinzi heads to a cleft in the cafe to fetch the herbs, assuring that it won't be long, and settling beside the striped hyena, Jasiri promises that he's safe and can rest as they tend to his injuries. The striped hyena thanks her, unable to imagine what would have happened to him if he wasn't found, and he asks what it's like to be a Pride Lander, to which she responds that it's peaceful and that the kingdom and its denizens are friendly. Mlinzi then approaches with an herb bundle, depositing it at the hyena's paws and slicing it open. He says that he has brought him thyme to ease his anxiety, and immediately, he laps it up. Mlinzi nudges feverfew flowers toward him, explaining that they'll soothe the pain in his head, and picking up broom, bindweed, and cobweb, he states that he will use these to fix his broken leg.

As Mlinzi treats the leg, Jasiri settles closer to the striped hyena, revealing that the Pride Lands is safe and harmonious. They are protected by the Lion Guard and ruled by Simba, who lets her clan reside in the Pride Lands since they respect the Circle of Life. Mlinzi, finishing his work on his leg, applies a marigold poltice to it and remarks that it's all wrapped up - he must stay off it for a few sunrises to let it heal. Kubariki adds that he's welcome to stay with them and share their prey while he recovers, and Mlinzi comments that it will be some time before the herbs for his head injury take effect. Jasiri offers to show him around the Pride Lands when he heals, and finding it fun, the hyena agrees to it. One week later, it is noted that the hyena has nearly fully recovered and has been able to walk on three legs, his injured one still in the process of healing. He is also now able to hunt small animals, eat, and drink on his own. He sits at the edge of the clearing, gazing across Chakula Plains, and trotting up to him, Mlinzi says that he's recovered significantly and is free to go home, whether that is in the Outlands or Pride Lands. Nodding, the hyena's eyes glint, and suddenly, he remembers everything clearly - his name is Shalo, and he is a vagabond that roams the Outlands, never having a home. He was taking a walk atop the cliffs when he slipped and injured himself. Curious, the rest of Kubariki's Clan joins Mlinzi, and Wema and Tunu bid farewell to the stranger. Asante, scolding them for acting improperly, apologizes, but Shalo doesn't mind and heads out into Chakula Plains, embracing the vagrant side of himself once more.
