Long live the King
―Scar whispers to Mufasa before he murders him by dropping him into the gorge full of wildebeests.

King Scar (born as Askari II) was a male, half Asiatic and African lion. He was a tyrant king of the Pridelands, and the leader of his army as a ghost. He is an Evil Lion of the Past. He was the son of King Ahadi and Queen Uru, the younger brother of Mufasa, the ex-mate of Diku, and the father of Kula.

Appearance[]

Scar had orangey brown fur, green eyes, black nose and black mane. His underbelly, paws and muzzle were orangey tan in colour. He had a scar on his right eye. His muzzle was long, and he lacked ear rims.

As an evil spirit, he gained a firery appearance.

Personality[]

As a cub, his personality is somewhat similar to his grandson, Kion, although he was more mischievous, snarky and not a sticker to the rules.

As an adolescent, Scar proves himself to be highly intelligent, manipulative, and motivated by jealousy. While leading his Lion Guard, Scar is an attentive defender, who, although somewhat jealous of his older brother, reluctantly respects Mufasa’s position as king. Despite his intelligence, he proves to be quite naive, as he trusts a stranger's plan to overtake the Pride Lands, which leads to a series of disasters. Despite this, Scar is cunning, quick-thinking, and grounded, as he spins the narrative in his favor when he reports it to Mufasa. He also seems to be a bit of an attention-seeker, as he demands respect for his deeds.

In adulthood, Scar remains much the same, though his sense of plotting takes a deadly turn. Still bitterly jealous of his elder brother and bogged down by feelings of inferiority, Scar is extremely temperamental, psychopathic, and antisocial, and even less reliant on his family, willing to frame and murder the only family members he has left in order to steal the throne.

Even when he is above Mufasa, having betrayed, murdered and stolen the throne from him, he remains sensitive to his brother's mention. It is one of the only subjects that can flare his temper; at the mere mention of Mufasa, he threatens Zazu, assaults Sarabi, and snaps at his own hyena minions. This indicates that Scar suffers from low self-esteem. Even in a position of power, he remains vulnerable to bouts of indecision and insecurity, as he is unable to accept criticism and too stubborn to take the advice of his advisers.

Despite his inner insecurities, Scar is a natural orator with charismatic charm, as he is able to rally the hyenas to his cause and gain the fanatical loyalty of Zira and her pride, even in death. However, underneath his charm, Scar is a coward who is more likely to run from a conflict than face it. When forced into a fight, he can hold his own and is not above cheating, as he lies to Simba and throws hot embers into his face in order to win. In addition, Scar is willing to betray his own allies in order to save his life. His manipulative and scheming nature results in his doom, as he is in turn betrayed by the hyenas due to years of broken promises as well as his failed attempts to frame them for his crimes.

Upon his return years later as a spirit, Scar is even more vengeful, bitter, and angry. He retains his plotting nature, though he becomes more maniacal, as he gleefully sows dissent, panic, and unrest in the Pride Lands through the work of his allies. He attempts to break the Circle of Life and even kill massive herds of animals in order to weaken the kingdom he'd once ruled.

He is also shown to have a temper even more terrible than before; if his allies show any sign of failure, cowardice, stupidity, or weakness, he will fly into a terrible rage. His anger only rises when his multiple plots are foiled by his great-nephew, Kion, whom he harbors a special hatred for. Scar continually taunts Kion for his failures and tries to lead him down a dark path. Scar is also shown to have little to no concept of forgiveness, as he is utterly dumbfounded and astonished that Kion chooses to forgive him rather than use the Roar out of anger.

History[]

Pre-Episode 1[]

Infanthood[]

Scar was born as Askari II soon after his older brother, Mufasa’s birth. He was destined to become the leader of the Lion Guard from birth, while his older brother, Mufasa was destined to be king. He was also named after Askari, the first leader of The Lion Guard. His parents were Uru and Ahadi, the king and queen of the Pridelands during that time. He was lifted into the air by Heshima, an elderly mandrill and former Royal Mjuzi of Askari II’s time. Her apprentice, Rafiki was watching behind her.

Cubhood[]

Askari II grew up to be a very brave but snarky and emotional lion cub. His father, Ahadi despised him due to his appearance and personality. His father wished that Askari II had golden fur and brown like Askari before him rather than having orange brown fur similarly to his mother, Uru and green eyes. He also wished that he behaved like his older brother, Mufasa (a mature and sticker-to-the rules cub.) As a cub, despite his snarky behaviour, he can be very brave, when he rescued a baby gazelle who was about to be hunted by a pack of jackals. He called to the unnamed Lion Guard who rescued Mkali (Nala’s Father) to help fight him against the evil jackals. When his older brother, Mufasa falls in love with a gentle tawny lioness cub named Sarabi, Askari II has grown jealous of their relationship. Despite having a strained relationship with her father, Askari II was very close to her mother, Uru. Uru tells him stories of her former home, the Tree of Life and how they helps sick and injured animals feel better. She also talks about their royal family, King Tavish (which happens to be her brother) and Queen Anika had a cub named Prince Bodhi. He tells Askari II that Bodhi is betrothed to a friendly lioness cub named Janna. Askari II asks his mother if he could go there. Uru said that he can’t because the whole journey is 2 months long and she wanted to keep him safe.

Teenagerhood:[]

When, her mother, Uru was threatened by a clan of hyenas, (which becomes Shenzi’s Clan in the future), Askari II found his roar and roared at the hyenas to keep his mother safe. This is the only time that his father, Ahadi was pleased with him. Uru congratulated Askari II saying that he will make a great leader. Heshima tells Askari II about the Lion Guard in the lair and how he must finds the fastest, bravest, strongest and keenest of sight from his Pride. Askari II met up with Jelani (the strongest), Jabari (the bravest), Mbiyu (the fastest) and Nyota (the keenest of sight.) Mbiyu and Nyota are Askari II’s cousins while Jelani and Jabari were boyfriends of Nyota and Mbiyu (they used to be rogue lions that came from an unnamed pride that was destroyed by Choyo and his army.) Together, they formed the Lion Guard, to help defend the Circle of Life. He then meets a lioness named Zira who becomes best friends with him. Askari II tells her all about the roar and how he uses it to make it rain in the dry season to provide water for the animals.

Young Adulthood[]

Askari II fell in love with a lioness named Diku. While Askari II was patrolling alone, a strange lion came up and asked Askari II to follow him for a ‘suprise.’ Askari II asked him who he is, and he lied that he is friends with Uru, knowing the close relationship he has with his mother. The strange lion took him to the Outlands, where he went past the miniature ‘pride rock’ (which Zira’s Pride used to use, imagining being able to rule with the real Pride Rock.) Under strange lion’s order a purple cobra was lurking in the shadows of the miniature ‘pride rock.’ He sprang up onto Askari II’s eye and left him with a scar. The cobra venom got to brain, making him confused and making it hard for him to think. The Strange Lion, asked him to follow his lead. Askari II refused, twisted by the cobra’s venom and roared at the Strange Lion. He left the Outlands, grunting in pain, to tell his brother that he stopped the Strange Lion.

Back at Pride Rock, Mufasa mocked him for defeating the Strange Lion and nicknamed him ‘Scar’. Askari II was very hurt by it and suddenly wished he was king instead. During the night he grunts with pain, and was unable to sleep. The next morning, not thinking clearing and twisted in his path, he was stressed and not calm and roared at his guard in a fit of rage. The roar was much more fatal than usual as it killed his whole guard. Betraying the Lions of the Past, he lost the roar forever. Now all he wants to do is to become king of Pride Rock, as he is no longer the Leader of the Lion Guard. A few weeks later, he calls himself Scar and tries to forgets his old name. He became infamous for the death of multiple lions due to being inflicted with cobra venom. Scar then asks Zira, to be his mate, but she said no as she at that time only saw him as a best friend, not a romantic relationship. Then, as part of his plan, Scar tries to trick Sarabi into becoming his mate along with Diku as he lied that Mufasa completed the circle of life at the hands of the clan of hyenas. However, Mufasa broke out of the cave he was trapped in and engaged in Scar in a furious battle for Sarabi. Mufasa, being much more muscular than Scar, easily won the battle, causing Scar to hate his brother much more and wish he was dead. Mufasa was furious at Scar, but he decided to let him stay in the Pridelands as he was family. After her mother, Uru died from an unexplained illness, he felt devastated as he lost the one he was closest to in his life, making the venom completely take over his mind. He wasn’t at all sad when his father disappeared into the desert and starved to death. He becomes friends with Shenzi, who is now the leader of her Clan and plots with the hyenas, a plan that will overthrow Mufasa and make him king instead. His ex-mate, Diku, gave birth to Kula, who he thought would be the heir for when he becomes king until he found out that the cub was a girl.

The Lion King Epic Trilogy[]

Adulthood[]

Episode 1: The Circle of Life[]

Scar makes his first appearance directly after the presentation of his nephew Simba, trapping an unsuspecting field mouse underneath his paw and lifting it slowly to eye level. He laments aloud how life is not fair, as he will never be king.

To make himself feel better, he tells the mouse that it will never see the light of another day, chuckles, and then bids it adieu, lowering it slowly into his jaws. Just before the mouse enters his mouth, Zazu interrupts, asking if his mother ever taught him not to play with his food. Scar responds with exasperation and tries to devour the bird after he points out that Mufasa will not be pleased with Scar's absence at Simba's ceremony. Just as he traps Zazu in his jaws, Scar is stopped by Mufasa, who tells Scar to drop Zazu. Begrudgingly, Scar does, leaving the hornbill drenched in saliva.

He approaches Mufasa, carelessly invading the king's personal space as he mocks his brother, but Mufasa moves on to more pressing matters, blaming Scar for skipping the ceremony. Scar reacts again in a sarcastic, surprised voice, pretending to feel "simply awful" for missing the presentation. Zazu points out that Scar should have been first in line at the ceremony, and Scar snaps his teeth at the bird, pointing out that before Simba's birth, he was first in line. Mufasa meets Scar's eyes and states that Simba is his son and the future king. Scar manages a sarcastic promise to practice his curtsy, turning his back and walking away from his brother. He veils a threat when Mufasa addresses him again, riling up the larger lion, who demands to know if he has been challenged. Scar reassures Mufasa that he would not dream of challenging him, as he does not have the brawn to do it. He then navigates around Mufasa and Zazu, and strides off into the savanna.

Episode 2: I Can't Wait to be King[]

Many seasons later, with Simba now a lively cub, Scar is visited by his nephew, who is excited about being given his first tour of the Pride Lands. Scar reacts with seething anger and annoyance as Simba gleefully points out he will be king someday. He then asks Scar what he will be once Simba is king, to which Scar replies, "A monkey's uncle." Simba laughs, calling his uncle weird, and Scar moves on in the conversation, taking interest in the cub's previous statement about being shown the whole kingdom.

Scar guesses aloud that Mufasa hadn't shown Simba what's beyond the northern border, and Simba instantly saddens, explaining that he has been forbidden to go there. Scar concurs with Mufasa's decision and purposefully lets it slip that the forbidden land is an elephant graveyard. In reaction to Simba's amazement, Scar claims that Simba would have found out sooner or later. Then he makes Simba promise to stay away from the graveyard and pushes the cub off with a paw, knowing that the young lion's curiosity will draw him there at long last.

Episode 3: The Elephant Graveyard[]

Scar's plan to slaughter Simba is foiled by Mufasa when the lion comes to the cub's rescue and fends off the hyenas. From atop a knoll, Scar watches in seething anger as Simba and his friend Nala are led out of danger by their savior Mufasa. For this, he berates the hyenas, debating whether to provide them with food or not, as he had "practically gift-wrapped" the cubs for them. Still infuriated, he drops a zebra haunch to his minions, who devour the meat amid protests that they couldn't have slaughtered the cubs with Mufasa in their defense. Banzai points out that the only thing they could do is kill Mufasa, a statement which makes Scar smile and launch into "Be Prepared." During the song, Scar plots to kill Mufasa and Simba and claim the throne with the assistance of the hyenas, who agree to his plan.

Episode 4: The Stampede[]

The following day, Scar lures Simba to the gorge and instructs him to wait on a rock for a "marvelous surprise" which Mufasa has planned. Simba is extremely curious, opting to go with Scar, but the lion abruptly declines his request. He brings up the incident with the hyenas, making Simba a little more compliant about staying on the rock, and suggests that while he is there, he works on his roar. Scar starts to move off when Simba addresses him again, asking if he will like the surprise. Scar smirks, telling Simba that the surprise is "to die for."

From atop the gorge's walls, he gives the signal to the hyenas, and they start up a thunderous stampede, comprised of hundreds of startled wildebeests. Scar searches for Mufasa and, with staged alarm, tells him about Simba being trapped in the wildebeest stampede. Both lions run to the gorge, spotting Simba clinging desperately to a weak branch. Mufasa jumps into the sea of hooves, and Scar drops his act of alarm, swatting Zazu into the wall of the gorge, rendering him unconscious. The dark lion slithers across the ridges of the gorge, never taking his eyes off Mufasa's position.

After rescuing Simba, the king leaps onto the gorge's walls, clinging to the side of the cliff, but Scar meets him at the top. After taking time to drink in Mufasa's helpless form, Scar slams his claws into his brother's paws and reveals his treachery by whispering, "Long live the king," before he throws Mufasa to his death.

Scar meets Simba at the bottom of the gorge, and upon seeing the cub curled up beneath Mufasa's broken body, he manipulates Simba into believing that Mufasa's death was his fault, because"the roar that Simba worked on caused the stampede." He orders Simba to run away and never return home. Scar proudly watches Simba run from him with a wicked grin, then sends the hyenas to kill Simba, but they fail this task due to Simba escaping into the desert through a big bed of thorn bushes much too dense for them to follow him through. Believing Simba is as good as dead out in the barren wasteland, the hyenas let the cub go (but warn him that they'll kill him if he ever comes back).

When Scar returns to the Pride Lands, he delivers the news of Simba and Mufasa's deaths, feigning grief. After this, he introduces the hyenas to the pride and ascends Pride Rock to assume the throne. Following the start of his reign, he permits the hyenas to over-hunt the Pride Lands and deplete the land of its plentiful resources. Slowly, the Pride Lands fall into decay, with Scar remaining in his cave with not a care in the world about the famine. Meanwhile, the lionesses continue to grieve for their lost king and prince. As king, Scar forbids any mention of Mufasa's name in his presence.

Episode 6: Betrayal[]

Scar, now the king smirks when he sees Mkali, a lion of his pride, die of starvation behind him. Later he is seen telling the pride that the hyenas will eat before the lions. He is then seen hunting a herd of zebras with Shenzi's hyena clan. His mate, Zira gives birth to Nuka, a sickly male lion cub. Scar decided that he is not fit to be future king? As meals begin to become more skimpy over a year, Scar traps Zazu in a bone cage and forces the hornbill to sing to him as he lies on his throne. When Zazu accidentally slips Mufasa's name, Scar reacts with fury, ordering Zazu to never mention his brother's name in his presence. Shortly after this, the hyenas come before Scar, grousing. Even Scar's minions, who are used to going hungry for days, start to complain to Scar about the land being bare. Scar, however, continues to pick his teeth with the bones of his previous meal, telling them to leave his cave when Banzai infuriates him by mentioning Mufasa's name as well.

Episode 8: Battle of Pride Rock

In the 8th episode, Scar calls Sarabi to him, asking her why the hunting party refuses to do its job, not accepting Sarabi's excuse that the herds have moved on. Scar merely passes their unsuccessful hunts off as the lionesses not looking hard enough. When Sarabi suggests they leave Pride Rock, Scar makes it clear that he is not moving the pride anywhere.

Sarabi furiously points out that his decision will cause the lionesses to starve and die. Scar turns his back on her, telling her that he's fine with this and that he is the king, so he can do whatever he wants. When she insinuates that he is not half the king Mufasa was, he strikes her, causing a full-grown Simba, who observed the entire scene in secret, to spring from hiding in his mother's defense. Scar mistakes him for Mufasa at first, but when it's made clear that it is Simba, he gives the hyenas an angry glare and cowers away as his nephew begins to back him into a corner.

Scar makes it clear that he is not resigning and points to the many hyenas above him, reminding Simba that they think he is the king. However, Nala and the lionesses reject him, and Simba threatens to fight if his uncle doesn't step down. Scar slinks around Simba, hinting at Mufasa's death. The prince then tells Scar that his trick won't work, but the lionesses are curious as to what Scar is talking about.

Pleasantly surprised, the king forces Simba to admit his responsibility for Mufasa's death and proceeds to back Simba over the edge of Pride Rock's peak. As Simba slips off the peak, using his forepaws to desperately cling for his life, Scar suddenly remembers Mufasa in a similar situation years ago. Slamming his claws into Simba's paws, Scar leans in and whispers to Simba that he is responsible for Mufasa's death.

Enraged, Simba hurls himself over the cliff and pins Scar down, a paw pressing down on his throat. Scar tries to weasel his way out of the situation, but his nephew's choking forces him to admit what really happened all those years ago. The hyenas ambush Simba afterward, prompting the lionesses to rush in to fight off the hyenas, during which Scar slinks away. Simba spots him, however, and gives chase. Trapped at Pride Rock's summit, Scar begs Simba for mercy and even tries to pin the blame on the hyenas, unaware that they are listening nearby, but Simba refuses to believe him. Then he asks Simba about his intentions, relieved when his nephew decides not to kill him making it clear that Simba wasn't going to resort to killing a member of his own family like Scar would have done. He is horrified when Simba gives him his own advice: to run away and never return.

Scar seemingly begins to cooperate and slinks away, but then he throws embers into Simba's eyes and attacks him while he is blinded. The two lions engage in a brutal fight, and at first they seem to be evenly matched, but Scar eventually knocks Simba onto his back. However, as Scar leaps to deliver the final blow, Simba uses his hind legs to flip Scar over the edge and send him tumbling down the cliff to the base of Pride Rock.

Scar survives the fall, and as he struggles to his feet, the hyenas arrive. Scar greets them in a pleasing manner, but to his horror, they reveal they overheard Scar blaming his crimes on them, and they begin to surround their treacherous fallen master with wide and hungry grins. Realizing that he is in danger, Scar begs for mercy and attempts to explain himself, but the hyenas have had enough of his treachery and broken promises. In their hunger and vengeance, the hyenas surround Scar and close in, leaping upon him and mauling him to death as flames rise around them. Once Scar is gone, Simba takes his place as the king of the Pride Lands.

After Death[]

Episode 16: Scar's Return[]

The spirit of Scar is summoned from the Evil Place of the Past when Janja (the son of Shenzi and Banzai) throws Makini's bakora staff into the lava. This occurred after Kion roars in anger in the volcano, in order for him to be summoned. After being summoned, he introduced himself in front of Janja's clan and Ushari (an egyptian cobra.)

Episode 17: Jasiri's Hyena Resistance[]

Jasiri tells her clan that Scar has returned, but that they also will help the Guard to defeat him by forming a Hyena Resistance. Elsewhere in the Outlands while preparing to attack Mizimu Grove, Janja's clan gets blocked by a rock slide caused by the Hyena Resistance. When Scar hears the news, he gets super mad and fiercely roars at Janja, knocking him away. Scar almost grows angry at Kiburi too, who saves himself by stating that the problem was that the plan did not go as planned. Scar then orders Kiburi's float to take over Big Springs. However, the Hyena Resistance stops them. Then, he orders Reirei's pack to take over Ukuni Woods. The Hyena Resistance watch above, and roll down a large boulder to the front of the cave, sealing Reirei's pack in before they can leave. Later, Janja and the skinks report back to Scar and reveals that Jasiri and her Hyena Resistance are behind all of this. After hearing that Janja lied to him about eliminating Jasiri on their previous encounter, Scar is furious and demands that he takes care of her and her clan for good, by playing them at their own game. He tells Janja to announce that he and his clan will be attacking Mizimu Grove again, but will instead attack her and her clan, while the Lion Guard is at the grove. Janja gets confused initially, but Scar soon makes it clear. After telling him to also bring the jackals and crocodiles with him and his clan, Scar coldly warns Janja not to let him down...again.

Episode 18: Pridelanders Unite[]

Scar finds out that the Pride Landers are working together to defeat him. When Janja finds this funny, Scar tells him that Pride Landers forming an alliance would mean problems for his plan. However, since Kion's friendship with Makuu was being swayed, Scar orders his army to take over Makuu's watering hole, something, that ignites excitement in Kiburi.

Episode 19: A Hyena's Change of Heart[]

Scar is told by Shupavu's Group that Janja and his clan is considering changing sides and has betrayed him. Furious, he orders Shupavu and Njano to get Janja and his clan to come to him. Janja started to confess that he has feelings for Jasiri and want to be with his clan. He is enraged at this and roars at them, making the hyenas hit the wall. He then threatened Janja and his clan that if he don't kill Jasiri, he will destroy his clan. Wimping, and unable to say anything Janja's clan fled. Scar starts making plans with Reirei's Pack, Zira's Pride, Kiburi's Float and Mzingo's Parliament on how they would get rid of Janja and his clan.

Episode 20: Battle of the Pridelands[]

Several months into the war with the Lion Guard, Scar hears from his skinks that Janja is considering defecting from his army and joining Jasiri, as well as the Lion Guard planning to assault the Outlands. Scar summons Janja and tells him that Kion is powerful enough to defeat him and could do so if he uses his most powerful roar in the caldera. Scar then orders Janja to go distract the Lion Guard by luring them into their lair at Pride Rock and not letting them escape. However, Janja doesn't realize that the plan wasn't just meant to eliminate the Lion Guard and the Royal Family, this was also Scar's plan for eliminating a potential hyena revolt. While Janja and the hyenas are distracting the Lion Guard inside their lair, the other Outlanders start a fire on Pride Rock and Janja barely escapes the lair before the main exit is blocked off. Janja realizes Scar betrayed him and goes to find Jasiri for help while the Lion Guard and hyenas escape the lair using the underwater entrance to Beshte's pond. Scar appears on top of the fire on Pride Rock and sees that Kion survived the fire. Scar tells Kion to lead the animals out of the Pride Lands since Kion isn't powerful enough to defeat him, but Kion can come to the caldera if he wants to try before disappearing. Having defected to the Pride Lands, Janja tells Kion what Scar told him that the only way to defeat Scar is to use the most powerful roar at the caldera. Back at the Caldera, Scar tells Ushari that he anticipated that Kion would survive and admits that he lied to Janja about how he could be defeated by Kion's roar. Even though Kion's roar could defeat Scar, if Kion were to use his most powerful roar in the caldera, it would cause a massive volcanic eruption that would turn the Pride Lands into awasteland and kill all of Scar's enemies at once. For the next part of his plan, Scar tells Ushari how he actually got his scar. In a flashback, an adolescent Scar is patrolling the Pride Lands, when a strange lion walks up to him. Knowing that he has the Roar of the Elders, the strange lion filled Scar's head with lies, and suggested that Scar should be the king of the Pride Lands. But he then met a strange cobra and the snake gave him a scar on his left eye with venom, which caused his darker desires for the throne to emerge out in force. The Lion tried to coerce Scar into obeying him in exchange for a cure, but Scar used the Roar to eliminate the Lion and the Cobra. After a young Mufasa brushed off what happened to Scar instead of praising him, Scar wanted his Lion Guard to eliminate Mufasa so that he could take the throne. However, they refused to obey him, so Scar used the Roar and destroyed them. This caused him to lose the Roar forever, which made him shrivelled and horrible. Losing the Roar also led up to him killing his brother, exiling his nephew, and ruling the Pride Lands with an iron claw before he was defeated and killed in his fight with Simba. Once Scar has informed Ushari, he tells the cobra that in order for the plan to work, Kion must lose control of the Roar, before announcing that the day of the battle will mark the day Kion gets his scar. Afterward, the Lion Guard arrive at the Outlands Volcano after having defeated the Outlanders. Scar confronts the Guard and orders Ushari to attack Kion, who is left with a scar over his left eye, like his great-uncle's. Scar tries to goad Kion into using the Roar in anger by singing his own version of Sisi Ni Sawa. Kion remembers not to fight fire with fire, and tells Scar that he forgives him for all the crimes he has committed, much to Scar's horror. Kion then summons the Great Lions of the Past with a gentle blow of air, who then create rain over the volcano. Being made of fire, Scar's spirit is extinguished by the rain. In his last words, Scar tells Kion that the Roar of the Elders is a curse and that he will see that they are the same before vanishing completely. The lava then hardens into rock, destroying the Mark of Evil, finally ending Scar's threat to the Pride Lands once and for all.
