"We can all be reminded of his braveries. His strength. And his selflessness. The sacrifice a true hero always makes to help others. When someone needed help, Kion never thought of himself."
—Simba

Return of the King is the thirty-sixth chapter of The Lion King: The Full Story. It is the final chapter chronologigly and the final chapter of the film overall.

Synopsis

Kion marries Queen Rani becoming the King of the Tree of Life with support, though in his absence from the Pride Lands, his father Simba must face a final enemy to bring true peace in the Pride Lands.

Summary

"Destiny is not always what you think, it can be deceiving ... or simply wrong! We all have felt it."
—Rafiki

At the Tree of Life, Kion marries Queen Rani, alongside being coronated at the Tree of Life as king. Later, at Mizimu Grove, Kion and Rani symbolize the union of Simba's Pride and the Night Pride, bonding them in treaty and familial respect.

Some years later, Makucha, Chuluun, Mama Binturong and Ora find the Elephant Graveyard. It has been some years since Kion's wedding and their exile from the Tree of Life, with Machuka seeking a new area to conquer, with blood if necessary. During this Ma Tembo and her elephants are welcomed back into Kilio Valley by Simba and the Pride Lands prosper, revealing that Kiburi's float has rejoined Makuu's float, alongside Rafiki telling Mtoto and Shauku the story of Simba and Nala's incident at the Elephant Graveyard and Kion and Rani sending Kopa to visit Simba and Nala.

However, Smun, Jiona and Fahari arrive at the Elephant Graveyard, recognizing Makucha and informing them that the Pride Lands aren't far and that Kion has moved to the Tree of Life officially, much to Makucha's excitement. However, Vitani's Guard appear, informing them that these lands aren't theres, with Makcuha, Chuluun, Mama Binturong and Ora taking on the Lion Guard whilst the other three enter the Pride Lands.

Soon, the others enter the Pride Lands with Vitani's Guard on their tail, much to Simba's shock. Simba orders the Lion Guard to protect the Pride Lands while the royal family deals with Makucha. Eventually, Makucha is defeated, with Simba declaring war on Makucha, which is to take place, with Kopa, just arriving at the Pride Lands watching, immediately returning to the Tree of Life.

Whilst in the Marsh Forest, Kopa encounters Bunga and Binga, and informs them of the situation, with them deciding that Kopa will inform the Night Pride and Bunga and Binga will rally the Tree of Life Residents. That day, Simba visits Pua, seeking advice from him and that night Simba visits Hakuna Matata Oasis, where he reunites with Timon and Pumbaa are after some years of being apart, informing them of the situation and inviting them to Pride Rock. At Pride Rock, Simba informs Nala, Kiara, Sarabi and Kovu of the situation, and asks Vitani to rally the Pride Landers, for Timon and Pumbaa to train them and for Kiara to rally the Outlanders. Whilst going to meet with Jasiri, Kiara is attacked by Mzingo, though he quickly apologizes when he realizes it is Kiara and Kiara informs Jasiri and Mzingo on the war to occur in the Pride Lands, with Jasiri and Mzingo leaving to rally the Outlanders. The Pride Landers soon begin to train and the Outlanders arrive, pledging loyalty to Simba, with the king making a speech to the Pride Landers.

Whilst sleeping, Simba has a nightmare about Makucha's army teaming up with Scar and Zira and take over the Pride Lands, giving Simba a scar before killing him. Simba wakes, where he is comforted by Nala and Sarabi and he also speaks with Rafiki about destiny and how it can be deceiving.

In the morning, the final battle occurs in the gorge of the Pride Lands. During the battle, after fighting Reirei's pack, Ora and his bank are defeated and Ora is killed by Kovu after knocking him into a river (the same river his mother died). Makuu, Kiburi and their float easily defeat Smun and his prickle (with Ora's bank and Smun and his prickle fleeing the battlefiled), whilst the Pride Landers fight members of Makucha's leap. Soon, the Night Pride and the Tree of Life appear after the battle continues longer than expected. Jiona and Fahari are defeated by Timon, Pumbaa, Ma and Uncle Max and after Makucha fights Simba, Chuluun fights Fuli and Mama Binturong is fought by Timon, Pumbaa, Bunga, Ma and Uncle Max, they are roared away by Kion and Vitani using the Roar of the Elders.

However, due to the roar's power, a sinkhole is started. Simba and Vitani escape, though Kion is killed. At Pride Rock, Simba announces his son's death and his funeral is hosted at Mizimu Grove, and later, Mheetu, the cub of Kiara and Kovu is presented as the next heir to the throne, with the Circle of Life continuing.

Reception

General

Return of the King received mixed reviews from fans, though from critics, the review was more positive. The vocal performances (particularly those of Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabella), the visuals and the score received praise, though the story and perspective received criticism from fans and critics alike.

Criticism

Kion's Role / Death

The primary criticism of the chapter was the lack of screen-time Kion (and the Tree of Life) received in the final chapter of the film. Throughout the chapter, Kion is given minor role until the ending (appearing only in 2 scenes before his arrival during battle), where Kion sacrifices his life for the Pride Lands, which received major criticism. When the idea was first pitched, it received mixed views from NightPrideFan02, though the idea was still used to bring emotional weight to the chapter, with the chapter receiving worse reviews because of it.

The Tree of Life's Residents

Much like Kion's role, the amount of screen-time the Tree of Life's residents (such as Beshte, Ono, Fuli and Anga) received criticism. Kion's Lion Guard (excluding Bunga and Fuli) only appear at the wedding of Kion and Rani, arriving late at the final battle in the Pride Lands, Kion's funeral at Mizimu Grove and Mheetu's presentation at Pride Rock. Despite that, Fuli only gets a brief cameo in an additional scene, where she and Azaad watch Kopa leave to visit the Pride Lands, nuzzling. This scene indicated that Fuli and Azaad were mates, which was never confirmed in The Lion Guard, the same occurred with Bunga and Binga in a longer scene.
