The Back Lands cannot lose to a honey badger.
―Okereke

Okereke is an adolescent lion that lives in the Back Lands. He is the bravest member of Mshale's Lion Guard.

He is a minor character in Legends of the Lion Guard.

Appearance []

Okereke has a tannish-orange pelt with lighter tan patches on his muzzle, paws, chest, and underbelly. He has a short, brown mane, black ear rims, dark pink inner ears, and a dark purple nose. His eyerims are cream at the bottom and tannish-brown on the top. His eyes are light green. The Mark of the Guard is imprinted in gold on his left shoulder.

Personality []

Okereke is prideful, and while he does care about others, can be blinded by his arrogance and do wrong. This is shown when he cheats in the Pride Lands Games. Not even when he is chastised by Makuu and even the monarchy does Okereke learn from his lessons. He is also shown to harbor a deep grudge and disdain toward Bunga.

History []

Legends of the Lion Guard: Protectors of the Pride Lands[]

The Pride Lands Games[]

Okereke competes in the Pride Land Games for team Back Lands, and goes third in each competition. He shows disdain for Bunga, not wanting to let his team lose to a honey badger, and deliberately shoves him into the path of a crocodile in the swimming competition. While this makes Bunga start over, karma comes to bite Okereke back, as Makuu notices and bites him as well. Makuu warns him that his poor sportsmanship has cost the Back Lands the games, pointing out that he once went down that path, and adding that Simba and Chifu will be informed of this. However, Okereke doesn't care, and starts over. During the running relay, Okereke again sabotages Bunga by flicking a rock into his path and tripping him. Once more, Makuu warns him about what more he's wanting to lose, but he still doesn't care. In the stone throw, he is visibly upset when Bunga scores more points than him, as his stone doesn't even come close to landing in a hole. He doesn't fare any better in the stick toss as well. In the wrestling competition, Okereke faces Bunga, and while the fight goes normally as first, things soon take a turn for the worse.

Okereke grabs Bunga's leg and starts dragging him around, the honey badger groaning in pain. Simba warns him to stop, but the lion doesn't listen, and continues dragging Bunga until Sarabi drags him away and allows the Royal Mjuzis to begin treatment. Chifu demands an explanation, but Okereke just chuckles and said it served Bunga right. However, Makuu comes forward, and brings up his poor sportsmanship from before. Furious, Chifu demands if this is true, and when Okereke confirms, Mshale expresses his disappointment. Mshale apologizes to Simba, as he was unaware of this, but Simba reassures him that it is okay. The king then decides to disqualify the entire Back Lands team, and allows Chifu and Wimbo to punish Okereke to their discretion. Mshale decides to punish him himself, as he is on his Lion Guard, and officially bars Okereke from patrols and Lion Guard duties for three days, also banning him from leaving Mirihi Forest. Chifu adds that this punishment is effective as soon as the Nyuma Pride returns to the Back Lands.

Team Play[]

Fuli states that she still can't believe Okereke would ever hurt Bunga like he did.

A Wonderful Royal Summit[]

Okereke attends the Royal Summit, notably scowling and appearing unhappy that he is in the Pride Lands.

The Ultimate Lion Guard Day[]

Legends of the Lion Guard: Battle for the Pride Lands[]

Okereke is now a teenager. He and the rest of the Lion Guard are gathered by Chifu in Mirihi Forest in order to hear news, and Bukali reveals that a mark was discovered by Kion and Rafiki, and skeptical, Okereke questions what kind of mark. Bukali reveals that Scar has returned, and wanting to train for battle, Mshale informs the Back Landers will be trained by his Guard. He assigns Okereke and Magoro to take a team to the canyons, but Okereke scoffs, asking why they have to help Bunga and his friends. Chifu sternly reminds him that they are allied with the Pride Lands, and Mshale inquires if he wants his Lion Guard duties suspended for a second time. Okereke begrudgingly obeys them and he follows Magoro in the direction of the canyons. When Scar commences his war on the Pride Lands, Mshale's Lion Guard is part of the crowd gathered at the base of Pride Rock.

Upon being informed that Bunga, Ono, and Anga are struggling to fight the hyenas at Chekundu Cliffs, Simba sends the Back Lands Lion Guard there to help them. Upon arriving, Mshale strictly warns Okereke that he will be suspended from his duties should he do anything to harm Bunga.
