One of the most successful populations of marten, the yellow-throated marten is native to Asia and spans from the Himalayas in Nepal to southern China and as far south as Vietnam, though they are more commonly found in Afghanistan and Pakistan. They are dinural, usually hunting in pairs, but can hunt in threes or in a whole pack. Having an omnivorous diet, they will eat nectar and fruits, but prefer hunting animals like pheasants, chicken, muntjac fawns, and even panda cubs.
Due to its lack of predators, stable population, and occurance across Asia, the IUCN Red List has listed the yellow-throated marten as a species of Least Concern.
Yellow-throated martens are noted to be very robust and flexible; they have elongated thoraxes, small, pointed heads, and long necks and tails. Feet are broad and their limbs are short and strong. Notably, this species of marten has a strong, foul odor that comes from the liquid in their anal glands, which can be used for defensive purposes.
The yellow-throated marten has short, brownish-yellow fur with a golden tone on the back. It becomes more browner on its hind quarters. They have a blackish-brown head with reddish cheeks and white hair tips. Like its name suggests, the patch of fur on their throats are yellow to golden in color. The lower forelimbs and paws of the yellow-throated marten is black, as well as their tail, which also has a violet hue and gray base.
