Kovu is a male lion. He is the son of Regandi and Merah, the sister of Vitani, the mate of Kiara, and the father of Amira, Frerin, Jasmin, and Shauri. He is a member of Simba's Pride and is the future king of the Pride Lands.
He is a recurring character in Legends of the Lion Guard.
Appearance[]
Kovu's pelt is auburn, while his muzzle, paws, and underbelly are paler in color. His mane is dark brown. His eyes are green.
Personality[]
Kovu is shown to be very level-headed, open-minded, and optimistic. Although he has a more brash and boastful side to himself from the background he was raised in, he is compassionate to his loved ones and children, guiding them towards their futures and always supporting them when need be. His cool temper contrasts with the spunkier side of both his sister and mate, and at times, Kovu will serve as a mediator in disagreements. Despite being raised in a harsh and toxic background, Kovu did not follow in the pawsteps of those in his youth and disagrees with bloodshed, only drawing blood if necessary. He has a strict, tougher side that emerges when those he loves or something he likes his in danger. Regardless, Kovu is mellow and a doting father who is ready for his role as future king.
History[]
Backstory[]
Kovu was born to Regandi and Merah, along with his sister, Vitani, in the Pride Lands during the reign of Scar. Scar picked Kovu to be his successor, but before he could prepare him, Simba returned to Pride Rock and defeated Scar. Zira and a few who supported Scar attempted to rebel against Simba, but he ended up exiling them, and Kovu and his family had no choice but to follow Zira into their new home, the Outlands. At some point in his cubhood, Kovu met Kiara, but Zira and Simba separated them because of their feud.
Over time, Kovu and his sister were trained by Zira to be ruthless killers, and by adulthood, she deemed him ready to kill Simba. Regandi and Merah could do nothing to stop what was happening, as rebelling against Zira risked their lives, and they had no choice but to watch their children change into assassins. As part of Zira's plan, Vitani and Nuka set fire to the Pride Lands, trapping Kiara, who was on her first hunt. Kovu rescued her and returned her to Simba's Pride, where he was begrudgingly accepted by Simba. However, instead of killing Simba like he was trained to do, Kovu instead fell in love with Kiara and began proving himself to the pride. His betrayal got to Zira, who was angry compared to Regandi and Merah; the latter two were overjoyed that kindness prevailed in their son.
One day, while Simba and Kovu were out alone, Zira and the Outsiders ambushed them. The attempt to kill Simba failed, and furious at Kovu for letting the king get away, as well as seemingly causing Nuka's death, Zira scarred him on his left eye - worrying Regandi and Merah. When Kovu returned to Pride Rock, Simba believed that he had been led into a trap, and much to Kiara's ire, exiled Kovu from the Pride Lands. This caused Kiara to snap at her father and run away, eventually meeting up with Kovu in a faraway desert. While Kovu wanted to stay away from the Pride Lands, Kiara convinced him to return so they could stop the Outsiders and Simba's Pride from fighting. In the rain, both returned and confronted the warring lions.
Standing up to Zira, Kovu refused to get out of her way, and Kiara convinced Simba that the Outsiders were one of them, something that Simba taught her long ago. When Zira attempted to launch an attack to avenge Scar, the Outsiders, including Regandi and Merah, turned on her, standing with Simba. Enraged, Zira tried attacking Simba on her own, but instead fell off a cliff with Kiara. With her refusal to let her hate go, Zira fell to her death and drowned in the rushing water of the gorge. Simba finally accepted Kovu, his parents, and Vitani into his pride. Kovu and Kiara were officially wed, and soon, they had four cubs: Amira, Jasmin, Frerin, and Shauri. Kovu is very supportive of his children, nieces, nephews, and in-laws, and guides them with the knowledge he has found.
