Part 1: The Plan[]
On a beautiful day in the Pride Lands, Simba had assembled the Lion Guard, Makini, Rafiki, Mhina, Zazu, Timon, Pumbaa, and the pride at Pride Rock.
“What's this about, Daddy?” Kiara asked.
“Tomorrow is Kion and Nguruma's birthday. Your mother and I have decided to plan a celebration for them.” Simba said.
“How can we help, your majesty?” Ono asked.
“Well, we thought we'd host the celebration in Mizimu Grove, so we'll need to plan everything today, in order for it to go perfectly.” Nala said.
“Where are Kion and Nguruma?” Bunga asked.
Beshte cleared his throat.
“The Guard is happy to help in any way we can, your majesties.” Beshte said.
“Thank you, Beshte.” Simba said.
Mhina cleared his throat.
“I can tell my family, and other Leopon Plains residents when I go home later.” Mhina said.
“Thank you, Mhina. Nala and I have invited animals from the Tree of Life, Theluji Mountains, South Lands, and Back Lands to the celebration as well.” Simba said.
“This sounds like it'll be a great celebration, Papa.” Kohana said.
“Yes, it certainly will be.” Simba said.
Meanwhile, Sarabi had taken Kion and Nguruma to the Watering Hole. They were settled down underneath an acacia tree.
“Why are we here, Nai Nai?” Kion asked, his tail wrapped around Nguruma's flank.
“I thought it would be nice for us to spend some time together. I haven't been alone with the two of you in moons.” Sarabi said.
“What do you want to do, Nai Nai?” Nguruma asked.
“Would you two like to hear a story about your grandfather?” Sarabi asked.
“Yes, Nai Nai. We'd love that.” Kion said.
“All right, my darlings.” Sarabi said.
Kion and Nguruma nestled closer to her pelt.
“When your grandfather and great-uncle were young, your great-grandmother, Uru set off to find a new water source, as the Pride Lands was facing a devastating drought.” Sarabi began.
Meanwhile, Simba, the Lion Guard, Makini, Rafiki, Mhina, Zazu, Timon, Pumbaa, and the pride had gathered in Mizimu Grove.
“What's the plan, Grandpa?” Amira asked.
“Today, we will plan for the celebration. Any events that would take place, and presents to be given.” Simba said.
Nala cleared her throat.
“I thought you or I would make a speech about our sons, Simba.” Nala said.
“That's an excellent idea. We can both give a speech about our boys.” Simba said.
“We can give them a baobab ball, fruit, and flowers as gifts.” Kiara said.
“That is a wonderful idea, darling.” Simba said.
They didn't notice that Shupavu was observing them from a tree branch.
“Hmm. A celebration for the two princes. Very interesting.” Shupavu said.
She slipped down the tree trunk, and headed towards the border.
When Shupavu arrived in the Outlands, she saw Kiburi and Ushari waiting by the volcano.
“What news do you have, Shupavu?” Kiburi asked.
“The Pride Landers are planing a celebration for Kion and his brother tomorrow. Animals of all species will be attending.” Shupavu said.
“From all the kingdoms?” Ushari asked.
“Yes, every kingdom the Pride Lands has an alliance with.” Shupavu said.
“Hmm. That is interesting. We can use this to our advantage.” Ushari said.
“Yes, find my float, and reinforcements. We'll plan an attack.” Kiburi said.
“Of course, Kiburi.” Shupavu said.
Meanwhile, Simba, Nala, and the pride had returned to Pride Rock.
Simba and Nala were settled down outside the den, the pride was assembled behind them.
“Mom should be home with Kion and Nguruma soon. I told Zazu to let her know today's planning session was over.” Simba said.
Nala glanced up.
“Here they come.” Nala said warmly.
Kion bounded up to them. Sarabi and Nguruma following, Sarabi guiding Nguruma with her tail around his shoulders.
“Did you two have fun with your grandmother today?” Nala asked, as Kion settled down beside her.
“Yeah. She told us a story about Grandpa and Scar.” Kion said.
“That's nice, son.” Simba said, as Sarabi helped Nguruma settle down beside him.
“What were you doing today?” Nguruma asked.
Simba brushed his tail along Nguruma's spine.
“Your mother and I were hunting. Your sister was doing a royal duty.” Simba said.
“We're glad you and your brother got to spend time with your grandmother. Tomorrow, you'll be spending time with my parents.” Nala said.
“We're spending time with Grandpa Hasani and Nona tomorrow?” Kion asked.
Nala nodded.
“For now, it's getting late. We should all get some sleep.” Simba said.
He stood up, and helped Nguruma to his paws, wrapping his tail around Nguruma's flank.
Simba led the way into the den.
Part 2: The Birthday[]
The next morning, Kiburi's Float had assembled at the Outlands border.
“Where are the reinforcements from Shupavu?” Kondo asked.
“They'll be here. Shupavu's never let me down before.” Kiburi said.
“This'll be a big attack, won't it? Since animals from all the kingdoms will be in the Pride Lands.” Tamka said.
“Yes, this attack will be very large. That's why we need reinforcements.” Kiburi said.
Suddenly, Shupavu approached, Makucha and his leap following.
“These are your reinforcements? A leap of leopards?” Kiburi asked.
“Yes, a leap of leopards that is skilled at hunting rare animals, which will make up most of the attendees at the party today. You'll need them.” Shupavu said.
“There are more of them than of us, we could use them.” Tamka said.
“How could leopards do a better job of creating chaos than crocodiles?” Kiburi asked.
“Leopards are faster. We can move quicker than crocs can.” Chulunn said.
“All right. You can join the attack.” Kiburi said.
Meanwhile, in Leopon Plains, Ajani had assembled his delegation in Msafiri Forest.
“Is everyone ready to head to the Pride Lands?” Ajani asked.
“We're ready, Dad.” Mhina said excitedly.
Ajani's expression softened, and he moved forward to ruffle Mhina's head tuft.
“Are you excited to celebrate Kion and Nguruma's birthday, son?” Ajani asked.
“Yes, I can't wait. It'll be so fun.” Mhina said.
“Well then, let's get going.” Ajani said.
He began to lead the way to the border.
Meanwhile, Simba had assembled the Lion Guard, Makini, Rafiki, Timon, Pumbaa, and the pride at Pride Rock.
“All right. Today's the day. Sarafina and Hasani are distracting them, so we can make final preparations, then we'll be ready to start the party.” Simba said.
“Does everyone know their roles?” Nala asked.
“Kovu and I are in charge of collecting the gifts.” Kiara said.
“Makini will be painting her first painting, of Kion and Nguruma at Mizimu Grove.” Rafiki said.
“Excellent. Let's get started.” Simba said.
Suddenly, Zazu flew up to him, and landed beside him.
“The other delegations have arrived, Simba. They're waiting at the border near Lake Matope.” Zazu said.
“Thank you, Zazu.” Simba said.
Fuli exchanged a glance with Bunga and Beshte.
“We'll go get them, your majesty, and bring them to Mizimu Grove.” Fuli said.
“Thank you, Fuli.” Simba said.
Meanwhile, Sarafina and Hasani had taken Kion and Nguruma to Lake Kiziwa.
“What're we going to do today, Nona?” Kion asked.
“What would you and Nguruma like to do? Today is your day, and we'll do whatever you want.” Sarafina answered.
“Can we practice our tracking skills with Grandpa?” Nguruma asked.
“Of course, Nguruma.” Hasani said.
He stood up, and gently nudged Nguruma to his paws.
“Come with me. We can practice near this acacia tree.” Hasani said.
Kion moved to stand beside Nguruma, curling his tail protectively around Nguruma's flank.
Hasani led them towards an acacia tree.
“All right. Here's what you two are going to do, I'm going to the other side of this tree, and you're going to sneak up on me, without me seeing or hearing.” Hasani said.
“Challenge accepted, Grandpa.” Kion said.
He led Nguruma over to a patch of grass.
“Okay, crouch down, so we're downwind, and he can't scent us.” Kion said.
He and Nguruma crouched down, and began to move slowly towards Hasani, Kion keeping his tail on Nguruma's shoulder.
As Sarafina watched them, she felt a surge of pride.
“They're doing good, even though Nguruma has to rely on Kion to guide him.” Sarafina said.
She watched as Kion and Nguruma approached Hasani, and pounced on him.
“We surprised you, Grandpa!” Nguruma said brightly.
“You certainly did, well done.” Hasani said warmly, as he ruffled Nguruma's head tuft.
Sarafina padded forward, and bent down to nuzzle Kion's cheek.
“I'm proud of you both.” Sarafina said.
“Thanks, Nona.” Kion said.
Meanwhile, Simba, the Lion Guard, Makini, Rafiki, Timon, Pumbaa, the delegations from the kingdoms, and the pride had assembled in Mizimu Grove.
“All right, everything's arranged. Is Makini ready for the painting ceremony, Rafiki?” Simba asked.
“Yes, she is ready.” Rafiki said.
Simba glanced at the assembled animals.
“Today is not only a day to celebrate my sons, but also for Makini to take another step in her journey to become a royal mjuzi.” Simba said.
Rafiki and Kenene stepped forward, holding gourds, and passed them to Makini.
Makini moved towards a stone, and began to paint an image.
As she painted, Nala leaned towards Simba.
“Makini's doing excellent.” Nala said.
“Yes, she is.” Simba said.
When Makini finished, Rafiki stepped forward, and tapped his staff against the stone.
“Well done, Makini.” Rafiki said, as he ruffled Makini's mane.
“Thanks, Uncle Rafiki.” Makini said.
Simba stepped forward, and examined the painting.
“This is a lovely painting, Makini.” Simba said.
“Thank you, your majesty.” Makini said.
Simba glanced at the assembled animals.
“We are ready to begin the celebration.” Simba said.
Zazu cleared his throat.
“I shall go fetch Sarafina, Hasani, Kion, and Nguruma.” Zazu said.
“Thank you, Zazu.” Simba said.
He watched as Zazu flew off towards Lake Kiziwa.
When Zazu arrived at Lake Kiziwa, he saw Sarafina, Hasani, Kion, and Nguruma settled down underneath an acacia tree.
Sarafina glanced up as Zazu approached, and landed beside her.
“Is Simba ready to start the party?” Sarafina asked quietly.
Zazu nodded.
Sarafina glanced at Kion and Nguruma, who were playing with Hasani.
“Come on, it's time to go.” Sarafina said.
“Where are we going, Nona?” Kion asked.
“You'll see.” Sarafina said.
She watched as Kion helped Nguruma to his paws, wrapping his tail around his shoulders.
Sarafina led the way to Mizimu Grove.
When they arrived, they saw a crowd of animals had gathered.
“Why are all these animals here?” Kion asked.
Simba stepped forward.
“They're all here to celebrate your birthday, sons.” Simba said.
“Really?” Nguruma asked.
“Yes, everyone here wants to celebrate the two of you.” Nala said, as she moved to stand beside Simba.
Kion's expression brightened as he caught sight of Mhina, and he bounded over to him.
“Hi Mhina.” Kion said brightly.
“Hi Kion.” Mhina said.
Kion shifted his paws awkwardly.
“I'm glad you're here.” Kion said.
“Me too.” Mhina said.
Simba glanced at the assembled animals.
“In honor of our sons, Nala and I will now give a speech.” Simba said.
He and Nala exchanged a glance, and Nala stepped forward.
“Today, as we honor our sons, we remember how far they've come, since their birth.” Nala said.
“Both of our sons have made paths for themselves to follow, Kion's as the leader of the Lion Guard, and Nguruma's as someone to support both him, and their sister.” Simba said.
He didn't notice that Kiburi's Float and Makucha's Leap were observing the celebration from behind a bush.
“So, what's the plan?” Tamka asked.
“We attack the animals, and create chaos.” Kiburi said.
“So, what're we waiting for?” Makucha asked.
“Nothing. Let's go.” Kiburi said.
He stepped out from behind the bush, his float, and Makucha's Leap following.
“Well, what do we have here? A celebration for the princes.” Kiburi said.
Simba's expression hardened.
“This is a celebration for my sons. You have no business here.” Simba said.
“Why should we leave? This is a party, with many delicious guests.” Makucha said.
Kion stepped forward.
“Leave now, or prepare for a fight.” Kion said.
“We aren't going anywhere. This is perfect to feast on.” Chulunn said.
“Everyone, spread out and attack.” Kiburi ordered.
Kion glanced at Simba.
“Stay with the pride, Dad. The Guard can handle this.” Kion said.
Mhina cleared his throat.
“Let my siblings and I help, Kion.” Mhina said.
Rani stepped forward.
“Baliyo and I will help too.” Rani said.
“Okay. You can help.” Kion said.
He glanced at Fuli, Ono, Bunga, and Beshte.
“Fuli, Ono, Tatu, and Baliyo will deal with the leopards.” Kion said.
He glanced at Rani and Mhina.
“Me, Mhina, Kicheko, Kopa, Rani, Bunga, and Beshte deal with the crocs.” Kion said.
“Affirmative.” Ono said.
“You got it, Kion.” Beshte said.
Suddenly, Jasiri and Anga stepped out from the crowd of animals.
“We're helping too.” Jasiri said.
“Yep.” Anga said.
“Okay. You can help deal with the leopards.” Kion said.
Ono spread his wings, and took to the sky.
“Makucha's leopards are attacking Binga and Chausiku. Kiburi's crocs are going after Timon and Pumbaa, and Kiburi's going after Kohana.” Ono said.
Kion and Mhina exchanged a glance.
“Kohana's terrified of crocodiles.” Kion said.
“I'll help Kohana.” Mhina said, and he rushed off.
“Everyone, split up, and get them in one place, so I can use the Roar.” Kion said.
He watched as Fuli, Ono, Tatu, and Baliyo rushed off.
Meanwhile, Mhina had reached Kohana, who was being cornered against a tree by Kiburi.
“Leave her alone, Kiburi.” Mhina said.
“Why should I? She's a helpless cub.” Kiburi said.
Mhina lunged forward, knocking Kiburi away from Kohana. Kiburi stalked off.
Mhina moved towards Kohana.
“Are you okay?” He asked gently.
Kohana nodded shakily.
“I really don't like crocodiles.” Kohana said tearfully.
“I know, come on, I'll take you back to your mother.” Mhina said.
He led Kohana towards the ledge, where Vitani and Gula were waiting, with Na'Zyia, Masozi, and Ayana.
“Thank goodness, she's safe. Thank you, Mhina.” Vitani said, as Kohana rushed to nuzzle her and Gula.
“You're welcome.” Mhina said.
Meanwhile, Kiburi's Float and Makucha's Leap had been cornered in the middle of the grove by the Lion Guard, Tatu, Kopa, Kicheko, Rani, Baliyo, Anga, and Jasiri. Mhina rushed over to stand beside Kion.
“Last chance to leave peacefully.” Kion said.
“We aren't going anywhere. This is a feast.” Makucha said.
Kion unsheathed his claws, and sank them into the earth underneath him.
He braced himself, and performed the Roar.
It sent Makucha's Leap and Kiburi's Float flying backwards.
Kion watched as they headed towards the border.
He glanced at the assembled animals.
“They're gone. You're all safe now.” Kion said.
Simba cleared his throat.
“I propose that we proceed with the celebration, and give gifts to my sons.” Simba said.
Nala, Kiara, and Vitani stepped forward. Nala was holding calibrachoa flowers, Vitani was holding a star fruit, and Kiara was holding a baobab fruit.
They set the flowers and fruits down in front of Kion and Nguruma.
“Thank you, these are great gifts.” Kion said, his tail wrapped around Nguruma's shoulders.
Mhina approached them, and cleared his throat.
“Happy Birthday, you two.” Mhina said.
“Thanks, Mhina, I'm so glad you could be here to celebrate with us.” Kion said, shifting his paws awkwardly.
“I'm glad too. I always enjoy visiting you.” Mhina said.
Simba cleared his throat.
“I believe the birthday celebration for my sons can come to a conclusion. Thank you to all who helped make this day a success.” Simba said.
He glanced at the assembled animals.
“Timon and Pumbaa have offered to host the animals of Leopon Plains, the South Lands, Back Lands, and the Tree of Life at Hakuna Matata Falls. The members of Sokwe's Troop, the Night Pride, and the Tumaini Pride will be given shelter at Pride Rock.” Simba said.
“Dad, can the Guard, Nguruma, Mhina, Tatu, Kopa, Kicheko, Rani, Baliyo, Shauri, Frerin, Kohana, Ayana, and Jasmin sleep in the Lair tonight?” Kion asked.
“Of course, son.” Simba said warmly, as he ruffled Kion's head tuft.
He led the way to Pride Rock.
When they arrived, Kion led the Guard, Nguruma, Mhina, Tatu, Kopa, Kicheko, Rani, Baliyo, Shauri, Frerin, Kohana, Ayana, and Jasmin into the lair, and they settled down.
The next morning, Simba's Pride, the Lion Guard, the delegations from the kingdoms, and the Pride Landers gathered at Pride Rock.
Simba stepped forward, and cleared his throat.
“Despite an interruption, Nala and I are so pleased to have been able to welcome everyone to the Pride Lands to celebrate our sons.” Simba said.
Behind him, Mhina approached Kion.
“I had a great time. I'm so glad we could come celebrate with your family.” Mhina said.
“I'm glad too. It wouldn't have felt right celebrating our birthday without you.” Kion said.
