Mountain gorillas live in groups of 2 to 40 under the protection of a silverback, who serves as the troop's leader. A silverback will protect his troop from threats such as other gorillas, humans, or leopards. Sometimes, this entails the silverback sacrificing his life.
Female mountain gorillas typically give birth at about 10 years old, and have offspring every four or more years. Newborn gorillas weigh about four pounds and develop twice as fast as human infants. They will nurse and be weaned at 3 years old, after which they will grow to be more independent.
Gorillas, in particular mountain gorillas, are the largest living primates, with massive chests, powerful arms, and broad hands and feet. Their stomachs are bigger than their chests, due to enlarged intestines that digest the vegetation they consume. Their arms contain more muscle than their legs, which helps them to bend and collect vegetation for protection The average gorilla is six times stronger than a human, enabling them to break and lift heavy objects.
Gorillas have dark skin and thick black hair that insulates them against colder weather. Males are nicknamed "silverbacks" due to the silver coloration that forms along their backs and upper thighs upon reaching maturity. Lowland gorillas tend to have short, sparse hair, while mountains gorillas have longer, silkier hair. Adult gorillas are hairless on their chests, ears, fingers, lips, noses, palms, and soles.
