Peregrine falcons are large birds of prey with with blue-gray backs, barred white underparts, and a black head. They are famous for their speed, at which they can dive up to three hundred and twenty kilometers an hour, making it the fastest known avian in the world and the fastest member in all of the animal kingdom. Like many other animal species, the peregrine falcon is sexually dimorphic, and males are bigger than the females.
The range of the peregrine spans from the Arctic tundra to tropical regions, found everywhere on earth except for polar regions and New Zealand. This makes it a widely-found and widespread species of raptor. It is capable of living in urban areas, reminiscent of birds like the duck and pigeon, and it primarily hunts small birds, though will occassionally hunt small mammals, reptiles, and insects. Peregrines mate for life and nests on either cliff faces or man-made structures. It is well recognized as a strong hunter known for its trainability and versatility, used as a religious or national symbol by some societies.
